CHUCK ECKERT AND PAT HIRES CLOSE OUT THE SEASON WITH HUGE NEETS ENDURO VICTORIES…
October 14, 2012, Bechtelsville PA – The North East Enduro Tour Series (NEETS) presented their eighth and final race of the season for the dirt tour this past Sunday afternoon at Grandview Speedway. On a huge afternoon for Chuck Eckert, he emerged victorious in the Big Car one-on-one challenge races, and later scored a victory, his third of the season, in the “Mutha” 150-lap Enduro. To complete the hat trick, Eckert (Schuylkill Haven PA) earned the 2012 tour championship. Pat Hires of Levittown PA simply dominated the 150-lap Small Car Enduro and grabbed his third triumph of the season in that division. Jimmy Neiman (Tower City PA) was the one-on-one challenge winner and Dave Bentley Jr. (Downingtown PA) captured his second career tour championship.
After exiting his car in victory lane Eckert described his afternoon in one word, “Storybook”. It has been an incredible year for the second generation racer aboard his 1979 Chevy Malibu bodied #3 machine. Eckert captured a pair of victories earlier in the season and has been strong throughout. The coveted points title is the first of his career.
Eckert’s highly successful afternoon began in the Scott Dunn Auto Service sponsored one-on-one challenge races. Eckert won every 1-lap race, totaling to ten. Later, he strapped back behind the wheel and started the 150-lap endurance race from the 29th position. Eckert quietly worked his way to the front, and grabbed the lead from defending “Mutha” race winner Jason Brown after Brown’s car suffered a flat right rear tire. Eckert went on to claim the victory by a margin of 9.743 seconds.
Justen Steigerwalt (Barto PA) was within fighting distance during the closing laps and actually put on a nice battle with Eckert and Carl Ruppert (who eventually dropped from the race). Steigerwalt settled for second in the end. As a show of sportsmanship, Steigerwalt was the first driver to greet Eckert in victory lane and offer congratulations. Chuck Detweiler (Schuylkill Haven PA) executed a magnificent performance as he nursed his machine to a third place finish with no power steering. Detweiler lost the power steering on lap 50 and raced without it for the final 100 laps. Phil Levering (Parkerford PA), who competed in all four events held on the afternoon, drove from 26th to fourth in the end. Joel Pilgert (Boyertown PA) capped off a highly successful season with a fifth place effort, after starting from nineteenth.
Drivers that lead laps included: Doug Nickerson, Jeremy Krauss, Jason Brown, Chuck Detweiler, Carl Ruppert and of course Eckert.
Hires started the Small Car 150-lapper from the 14th position. The well established racer quickly moved to the front and grabbed the race lead from Brian Yelk on lap 19. Once he took control of the lead, Hires never looked back and lapped all but the second place race car. Hires became the win leading driver in the Small Cars, as he captured his third victory of the season. It was his fifth overall as Hires also scored a pair of Big Car victories this year.
Levering raced from 19th to second and was making some ground on the leader during the closing laps. Levering set quick time along the way. As another great show of sportsmanship, Levering greeted Hires in victory lane to offer his congrats. Ken Wallace (Woodlyn PA) concluded a successful ’12 with a third place effort and veteran racer Dave Bentley Sr. (Woodlyn PA) drove from 24th to fourth in the end. Katie Todorow (Quakertown PA) returned just two weeks after notching the huge 50-lap Ladies Championship race win and recorded a career Small Car best of fifth.
Neiman won the second match race and went on to score victories in the remaining eight events. Neiman is only a rookie in the NEETS Enduro events after spending time in the Roadrunner class a few years ago at the Selinsgrove (PA) Speedway.
Dave Bentley Jr. added to his collection of championships. The 2009 tour champ officially captured the 2012 crown aboard his Saturn #5 machine.
